An evironmental problem in Palmira

This improvement is around 85% in the urban area of Palmira. In contrast, in the Acopi-Yumbo stations and the urban area of Candelaria, with historically high records, there is hardly a slight decrease, the report states, which also emphasizes the quality of the air that is traditionally breathed in Palmira.

Most of the brick kilns in Palmira do not have a mining title or permit for atmospheric emissions, as reported by the Valle del Cauca Autonomous Corporation (CVC), which also instantly asked the Mayor's Office to take urgent occupations with the objective of mitigating the environmental impacts that continue to be generated in the locality. “Given that the brick construction activity is a classic and cultural activity in the municipality, it has been exhorted that the Municipal Management implement alternatives to minimize the environmental impacts caused by the atmospheric emissions that emanate, in the hands of a social participation that promotes sustainable development in the municipality ”, commented Isabel Cristina Echeverri, coordinator of the CVC's Amaime Basin Administration Unit. As if that were not enough, the artisanal activity of clay firing is done in artisanal “Pampa” type kilns and the establishments visited do not have ducts or chimneys to verify legal compliance with the emissions rule and according to the surveys carried out to the owners, approximately each brick factory generates about 32,000 units per month, for a total in the municipality of 1,094,000 brick units of which only 17.65% of the waste is reincorporated to the process, while 29.4% of these are led to the rubbish dumps. For this, the CVC suggests the work of a community kiln for each sector, which concentrates atmospheric emissions and these can be controlled and measured in a more positive way, or study the probability of relocation of brick construction establishments to a lot outside the urban perimeter and that the respective control is exercised in sectors dedicated to this industrial activity.
